Auriculo of ooracupunctuur is sinds begin jaren '50 van de vorige eeuw ontwikkeld door de in Lyon, Frankrijk, praktiserende arts dr. Paul Nogier. De resultaten van zijn werk zijn over de hele wereld bekend en zijn bevindingen worden onderwezen in Europa, de VS tot zelfs in China, de bakermat van de acupunctuur.

Nogier ontdekte bij toeval dat het hele menselijke lichaam als het ware geprojecteerd is op de oorschelp. Het principe van de ooracupunctuur is gebaseerd op het reflexmechanisme. Plaatselijk druk uitoefenen op een punt leidt tot een reactie. Deze reactie is waar te nemen met het Vasculair Autonoom Signaal (VAS). Behandeling gebeurt door de reflexpunten van het uitwendige oor te masseren, door kleine verblijfsnaalden te gebruiken die een paar dagen blijven zitten, of door elektrische of laserstimulatie.

Uit onderzoek is gebleken dat ooracupunctuur een effectieve manier om chronische en acute pijn te verlichten. Ooracupunctuur is ook ondersteunend bij het afkicken van verslavingen en bij het verbeteren van verschillende gemoedstoestanden.
